Big Sur Marathon: the bus is compulsory, and where you sleep decides whether you get up at 2:45 or 4:15

The premium you are bracing for does not exist

Almost every guide to this race opens by telling you the Monterey Peninsula is ruinously expensive on marathon weekend. We checked, and that is not what the numbers say.

We checked availability on 4 August 2026, comparing race weekend against an ordinary April weekend two weeks earlier — chosen to sit clear of Easter, which fell in March in 2027, and of the Mother’s Day weekend that distorts Carmel in May. The supply barely moves:

Prices tell the same story, with one exception. Across eight properties that appeared in both Carmel searches the median multiple was 1.07×, and two of the eight were priced identically in both weeks, while the Pine Inn was actually cheaper on race weekend:

Monterey is the outlier. Five matched properties there ran a median 1.32×, and one, The Monterey Hotel, jumped from $517 to $1,457, a 2.82× multiple that is the largest single move we found anywhere on the peninsula.

The explanation is scale. Four and a half thousand runners is a rounding error against a coastline that fills every weekend of the year with people who have come to look at it. Big Sur and Carmel are already at their ceiling in late April; the race cannot push them higher because there is nowhere higher to go.

So the thing this race costs you is not money.

It costs you the middle of the night

Highway 1 closes to private vehicles early on race morning. The organiser’s wording leaves nothing open:

Taking the free race-provided transportation to the start is required (unless you are staying in Big Sur) … Highway 1 is closed to private vehicles early race morning and there is no parking or runner drop off at any start area.

No parking, no drop-off, no rideshare lane, no friend with a car. The start at Big Sur Station is 36.5 kilometres from the Carmel finish as the crow flies, and the only vehicles going there are the race’s own.

Which means the number that actually governs your weekend is your boarding time. There are seven pick-ups, and the organiser states against each one which lodging it is meant for:

Four o’clock in the morning is the last boarding minute at every location on the peninsula. Work backwards from a 03:30 window — dressed, fed, taped, bag packed — and you are getting up at about quarter to three.

Pacific Grove has no bus

Here is the finding that is not on the transport page, because it is an absence rather than a statement.

Look at what the seven pick-ups cover: four in Monterey, one in Seaside, one on Carmel Valley Road, one in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Pacific Grove is not on the list. Neither is Pebble Beach.

Pacific Grove is a popular, well-priced place to stay — we measured it at 8.3 kilometres from the finish, comparable to Seaside, and it has no designated way to the start. Book there and your race morning begins with a drive, in the dark, to somebody else’s pick-up, to park a car you will not see again until a shuttle returns you to it in the afternoon.

That is not a disaster. It is simply a cost nobody mentions when they recommend Pacific Grove for its value, and it is worth knowing before rather than after.

The buses take you back to where you started

The second sentence people miss is on the same page:

Return shuttles will leave from the finish village between 9:30 AM and 2 PM, taking runners back to their morning departure locations.

Your morning departure location. Not your hotel. And Marathon Village itself is marked no drop-off or pick-up, so nobody can collect you from the finish either.

This inverts the usual logic of choosing a race hotel. The question is not how far your bed is from the finish line. It is whether your bed is walkable from your pick-up point, because that is where the day both starts and ends.

On that test one zone wins outright. We geocoded all seven pick-ups on 4 August 2026 and measured each against the finish at Highway 1 and Rio Road:

A useful check on our own method: the organiser describes Carmel Middle School as “~1 mile from Marathon Finish Village”. We measured 1.76 km, which is 1.09 miles — agreement to within a tenth of a mile, from independent geocoding.

Stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea and you walk to Carmel Plaza at 03:45, run to a finish 1.35 km away, and are dropped back at Carmel Plaza in the afternoon. Every other option puts a bus ride at both ends of the day.

Big Sur is the exemption, and there are four of them

The one way out of the 03:30 bus is to sleep on the course:

there will be two race-morning shuttles running continuous loops on Highway 1 from 4:45 until 5:45 AM … One shuttle will do a continuous loop of about two miles north of the start (to River Inn) and another a two-mile loop south of the start (to Deetjen’s). Runners will wait on Highway 1 for this shuttle.

An hour and a quarter later than the peninsula buses, in exchange for standing on the shoulder of a coastal highway in the dark waiting to flag down a minibus. Most people would take that trade.

They cannot, because our search returned four properties in Big Sur — and four in the control week too. This is not a race-week shortage; it is the permanent size of the market. The Big Sur River Inn, at the northern end of the shuttle loop the organiser names, was $954 for three nights on race weekend against $889 in the control. Above it, the Alila Ventana at $7,365 — and marginally more expensive in the ordinary week.

If you are drawn and Big Sur has a room, book it that day.

The drawing opens in a fortnight

The 2027 calendar is fully published, and the first date is imminent:

Two details matter more than they look. Selection charges the card you applied with, automatically. This is not an offer you accept later. And the guaranteed entry paths open at the same hour as the drawing, so if certainty is worth more to you than the fee, 19 August is the morning to act rather than the morning to enter a lottery.

The entry itself is $325 for drawing winners, in a field capped at about 4,500, open to anyone 16 or over.

Note what you cannot do with the entry, because the course policy is unusually restrictive: no strollers, baby joggers, children in backpacks, wheelchairs, hand cranks, knee scooters, bicycles, skates or unofficial pacers. For a race that starts before four in the morning and finishes 36 km from most beds, families should read that list before booking anything.

One warning about the organiser’s own website

We wasted twenty minutes on this, so you do not have to.

The site still hosts an orphaned page at /marathon/ from the 2017 race. It looks current, it ranks, and it carries a course time limit section that lists only one intermediate cutoff — mile 21.2 by 11:50 a.m.

The live 2027 page is at /races/marathon/, and it lists two: mile 15.2 by 10:30 a.m. and mile 21.2 by 11:50 a.m. A runner planning to the older page would be pacing to a checkpoint that no longer comes first.

The 2027 figures, from the live page: six hours, a 13:45 per-mile cut-off, course reopening to two-way traffic at 1 p.m., and no aid, medical or communications support at all for anyone off a six-hour pace. The course drops from 356 feet to 10 feet but climbs 2,182 feet on the way, which is why that pace is harder here than the arithmetic suggests.

What we cannot tell you yet

The seven pick-up locations and boarding windows above are the 2026 published edition. There is no 2027 edition, and there cannot be one yet: marathon entrants do not choose a pick-up until March 2027, through their haku participant account, and collect the bus ticket with their bib at the expo.

So treat the letters and the times as a well-established pattern rather than a 2027 commitment. What is certain for 2027 is the shape of it, a compulsory bus, boarding in a window ending at four in the morning, returning you in the afternoon to wherever you boarded.

Which is all you need to choose a hotel. Book Carmel-by-the-Sea, and you will be walking while everyone else is waiting for a coach.
