A hard deadline is one where missing it ends your race. Not "you would be rushed". You are not permitted to start, or you are removed from the course. Every guide on this site marks them explicitly, and this page collects all of them in one place.

Across 23 races we have verified 72 hard deadlines. 7 of those races give you no way to reach the start except one provided service, so missing a bus is not recoverable by taxi, by car, or on foot. The earliest deadline we have found anywhere is 03:30–04:00 at Big Sur International Marathon.

Races ranked by number of verified hard deadlines on race morning
RaceHard deadlinesFirst oneGetting to the startMiss it and
Athens Marathon506:15Last bus from Syngrou-FixMandatoryThirty minutes earlier than the general wave 1 cutoff. If Syngrou-Fix is your nearest point, this is your real deadline.
Comrades Marathon5~12 months outBook the start city: this is the real deadlineWalkWe found two bookable properties in Pietermaritzburg ten months before the 2027 race. This is the step that fails, and it fails long before entries do.
Big Sur International Marathon403:30–04:00Buses board at Monterey Transit Plaza, Del Monte Center and Carmel Middle SchoolMandatoryThe earlier window. Four o'clock is the last boarding minute anywhere, and Highway 1 is already closed to private cars.
Cape Town Marathon4~06:30Last park & ride bus to the start lineWalk2026 precedent. This is the hard edge of the transport plan and it falls roughly ninety minutes before the first participant wave.
Marine Corps Marathon407:20All runners startAssistedA single mass start for the main field, which is unusual at this size.
Loch Ness Marathon407:30–07:50Coaches depart InvernessMandatoryThe last one leaves at 07:50 for a 10:00 start. There is no later transport and no alternative route in.
Tokyo Marathon409:10Marathon startsWalkThe gun. From this moment your seven hours are running, regardless of when you actually cross the line.
Berlin Marathon415:40Cut-off at kilometre 33WalkMiss it, or exceed the 6:15 time limit from your own start, and you leave the route on the broom bus.
Walt Disney World Marathon3Sun 04:30Marathon startsAssistedThe earliest start of any race we cover, half an hour before Honolulu, two hours before Sydney.
Honolulu Marathon3Sun 05:00Marathon and 10k start togetherWalkBoth fields go at once and share the first 10K of the course, so the opening kilometres are far busier than the marathon entry list suggests.
Grandma's Marathon305:30London Road closesMandatoryAfter this, the Duluth East High School pickup must be reached via Superior Street. If you are staying on the London Road corridor this is the deadline that matters.
New York City Marathon307:00Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge closes to all trafficMandatoryYou must be at the start before this. After 07:00, vehicles from New Jersey must exit via Clove Road instead of Exit 14.
Philadelphia Marathon3Sun 07:00Marathon starts: and it does not wait for the queueWalkThe organiser states plainly that the start will not be delayed because of lines at security checkpoints. Your screening time is your problem, not theirs.
Chicago Marathon307:20Wave 1 corrals closeWalkFifteen minutes before Wave 1 runs. You cannot switch corrals on race day.
Dublin Marathon309:45Wave 4: a full hour after wave 1WalkPacers 4:30 to 5:00, plus tailwalkers for seven-hour participants. You cannot start earlier than your allocated wave, even as a walker.
London Marathon311:30All start lines closeMandatoryFor event safety reasons, participants will not be permitted to start after this time.
Gold Coast Marathon3At entryYou choose your predicted time: and it sets your waveWalkStart zone selections and updates are made when completing entry and must be made before entries close. This is the decision that governs your race morning, taken months before it.
Twin Cities Marathon2Sun 08:00Marathon startsAssistedA civilised gun time by marathon standards, and the single biggest reason this race is manageable.
Sydney Marathon208:40Start line cut-offWalkThe last moment you can begin the race. Everything about your morning works backwards from here.
Boston Marathon209:15Gear check closesMandatoryFifteen minutes before the last bus. If you need both, the order is fixed.
Valencia Marathon212:57Km 25 cutoff: a clock time, not an elapsed oneWalkAny runner passing km 25 after 12:57 must hand in their bib and leave the course. The organiser states the figure already discounts the wave offset, so it applies to everyone regardless of wave.
Two Oceans Marathon25 Aug 2026Half and Ultra ballot opensWalkThe public ballot for both flagship races. Blue Number Club members had their own window from 15 to 22 July 2026.
Edinburgh Marathon1FinishMusselburgh, six miles east of EdinburghAssistedThis is the constraint. You finish in a different town from the one you started in, on legs that have just run 42km.

What actually makes a morning hostile

Four things, and most of the races above have at least two of them.

  • Controlled access to the start. No car, no taxi, no walking. An official shuttle with a hard final departure, and no recovery if you miss it. 7 of the races above work this way.
  • A start town that cannot house you. Point-to-point races frequently begin somewhere with a fraction of the field's bed count, which turns the accommodation decision into a timing problem.
  • A closure ring around the finish. Reaching a hotel two hundred metres away can mean a two-mile detour on ruined legs.
  • A deadline before dawn. The column above is not theoretical. Big Sur boards its last bus at four in the morning, which means being awake at about quarter to three.

The "getting to the start" column is measured on the same basis as our lodging-ease index, checked on 4 August 2026. Walk means nothing can be late. Assisted means the organiser runs transport both ways, so a miss is recoverable. Mandatory means one provided service is the only way in, or your slot is pre-booked and binding.

Deadlines are taken from each guide's verified timeline and carry that guide's "last verified" date. Races without a published guide do not appear in the table, because we have not checked their timings. A race missing from it is not an easy race. It is an unchecked one.
