The organiser is explicit: each runner must pick up their own race packet, and no one may collect a race number for a friend or family member. That rules out the usual trick of sending one person from a group.

The Saturday event, run on Kalakaua Avenue through Waikiki — worth knowing if you are trying to sleep in on the day before a 5am alarm.

Realistically, your alarm
Your hotel
For a 05:00 gun with a walk to Ala Moana Boulevard in the dark. This is the earliest start of any race on this site.
Sun 05:00
Marathon and 10k start together
Ala Moana Boulevard
Both fields go at once and share the first 10K of the course, so the opening kilometres are far busier than the marathon entry list suggests.
Hard cutoff
~Mile 9
The high point of the course: 124 feet
Diamond Head
The organiser describes the course as mostly flat apart from Diamond Head. One hundred and twenty-four feet is the entire elevation story.
10:00
Temperature reaches the low 80s
Course
The organiser's own guidance: mid-60s at the start, low 80s by 10:00. At five hours in, that is the part of the race that hurts.
Hard cutoff
No cut-off
The course does not close
Course
There is no time limit. You must keep moving, and officials may remove anyone for safety, but nobody is swept for being slow.
Finish
Collect your shirt and medal in person
Kapiolani Park
The finisher tent is past the finish area. Shirts and medals are not mailed, so however long you take, you collect them there and then.
For once, the accommodation question answers itself
Most pages on this site exist because a city has put the start, the finish and the expo in three awkward places. Honolulu has not, and it is worth showing the numbers because they are unusually kind.
We geocoded all three fixed points of the weekend and measured them from central Waikiki:
| From central Waikiki | Distance |
|---|---|
| Ala Moana Boulevard start | 1.94 km |
| Kapiolani Park finish | 1.84 km |
| Hawaii Convention Center (Expo) | 1.42 km |
Under two kilometres to all three, and the start and finish are within a hundred metres of each other in how far away they are. The start-to-finish separation itself is 3.64 kilometres, the smallest of any point-to-point race we cover, smaller than Sydney’s 1.17 km only in the sense that Sydney’s gap is water and this one is a walkable stretch of Kalakaua Avenue.
Compare that with Philadelphia, where the expo and the start sit 1.85 km apart and only one district serves both. Or Valencia, where the expo is 8.4 kilometres out of town. Honolulu’s tourist strip happens to sit in the middle of its own marathon, which is a piece of luck rather than design, but it means the honest recommendation here is the obvious one.
Stay in Waikiki. The interesting question is not which city but which end of the strip, and the answer to that comes from the heat rather than the map.
Nothing stops you finishing, which is the problem
Two facts from the organiser, stated more plainly than most races would dare:
There are no qualifying times for the JAL Honolulu Marathon nor are there any entry limits.
The JAL Honolulu Marathon is the only world-class marathon that allows ALL participants to finish. There is no cut-off time!
No cap on entries. No qualifying standard. No sweeper bus. You must keep moving, and officials can remove someone on safety grounds, but nobody is pulled off the course for being slow.
That is genuinely admirable, and it is why Honolulu has one of the largest and most mixed fields in marathon running, with a very substantial share of walkers and first-timers.
It also removes the mechanism that every other race uses to get people off the road before conditions turn. And Honolulu’s conditions do turn.
The heat is the cut-off
The organiser publishes its own race-day temperature guidance, and reading it next to the start time is the most useful thing you can do before booking:
The temperature at the start can be in the mid 60’s and climb to the low 80’s by 10:00 AM.
The gun is at 05:00. Mid-60s Fahrenheit at five in the morning is close to perfect marathon weather. Low 80s at ten o’clock is not.
Now map that onto finishing times. A three-hour runner is done by 08:00 and never sees the worst of it. A five-hour runner finishes at 10:00, exactly as the temperature peaks into the low 80s. A seven-hour runner — entirely normal at a race with no cut-off and a large walking field — spends the whole back half of the day in it.
So the field splits in two. For the front, Honolulu is a cool, flat, early race. For everyone behind about the four-and-a-half-hour mark, it is a heat race that happens to start in the dark.
This is what should decide which end of Waikiki you book. If you expect to finish before nine, the shorter walk to the Ala Moana start is worth more to you. If you expect to be out past ten, the shorter walk back from Kapiolani Park is worth far more, because you will be doing it in the low 80s with a marathon in your legs. The Diamond Head end of the strip is the one that shortens that walk.
That is a real trade, and it is the opposite of the advice you would give at a race with a hard cut-off, where the morning always wins.
A 5am start is earlier than it sounds
This is the earliest gun on the site. Sydney goes at 06:30, Chicago at 07:35, Twin Cities at 08:00, Edinburgh at 10:00.
Work backwards from 05:00 with a two-kilometre walk to Ala Moana Boulevard and a field that includes the Start to Park 10k going at the same moment, and a realistic alarm is somewhere around 03:30. Nothing about Waikiki makes that easier. It is a resort strip, and the night before a marathon is still a Saturday night on Kalakaua Avenue, which also hosts the Merrie Mile that morning.
The practical consequences for what you book:
- Ask about the room’s aspect. A street-facing room on Kalakaua is a poor choice for the night before a 03:30 alarm.
- Check whether anything opens early. Nothing in a resort district is built around a five o’clock start, so a room with a kettle and somewhere to keep breakfast is worth more here than a hotel restaurant that opens at seven.
- Do not plan a late Saturday. The Merrie Mile is at 07:00 Saturday and the Expo trip is compulsory, so Saturday is already a working day.
Waikiki is busy in December regardless
Checked on 4 August 2026, comparing race weekend with the weekend before — deliberately the weekend before, because a control the week after would run into the Christmas period and overstate everything.
| Race weekend 11–14 Dec 2026 | Control 4–7 Dec 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Properties in Waikiki | 503 | 609 |
Eighty-three per cent of ordinary supply remained. Six properties appeared in both searches:
| Property | Race weekend | Control | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tropical Studios at Marine Surf | $1,182 | $715 | 1.65× |
| Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach | $855 | $735 | 1.16× |
| Shoreline Hotel Waikiki | $588 | $522 | 1.13× |
| First Cabin International | $478 | $456 | 1.05× |
| Marine Surf | $537 | $537 | 1.00× |
| Marine Surf 18th Floor Studio | $570 | $570 | 1.00× |
Median 1.09 times — two of the six identical to the dollar.
Honolulu therefore behaves like Tokyo rather than like Boston. The marathon is real but it is small relative to a destination that fills with holidaymakers in December anyway, and Waikiki has five hundred properties to absorb it. You are not racing other runners for a room.
What you are doing is booking into a high season. The prices above are not marathon prices, they are December-in-Hawaii prices, and no amount of early booking makes Waikiki cheap. Book early for position on the strip, not for a bargain.
The pickup rule that catches groups
One administrative detail with real consequences for a trip built around several people.
Packet pickup at the Hawaii Convention Center Expo is mandatory, and the organiser closes the usual workaround explicitly: each runner must pick up their own race packet, and nobody may collect a race number for a friend or family member.
At Loch Ness a friend can collect for you with a signed letter. At Philadelphia a representative can collect with your ID and confirmation. Here, nobody can. If six of you are running, six of you go to the Convention Center.
It is 1.42 kilometres from central Waikiki, so this is an inconvenience rather than a crisis, but it is a fixed appointment for every member of your party, and it should be on the itinerary rather than assumed away.
The same in-person rule applies at the other end: finisher shirts and medals are collected at Kapiolani Park on race day and are not mailed. However long you take, you collect them yourself, there and then.
What we cannot tell you yet
The City and County of Honolulu had not published its 2026 road-closure notice when we checked on 4 August 2026, so we are not going to guess at street-level timings for a course that runs out through Kahala and Hawaii Kai and back.
One further caution worth reading before you book flights. Entries are not refundable and not deferrable unless you bought booking protection at the time of registration, and the organiser states that refund claims are handled by the Refund Protect Group and that the marathon cannot influence those decisions. For a race most people fly a long way to reach, that is a materially different risk profile from a race you can drive to, and it is an argument for a refundable room even though the accommodation market here is comfortable.
What will not change is the shape: a five o’clock gun, a course with no cut-off and 124 feet of climbing, a temperature that reaches the low 80s by mid-morning, and a resort strip that sits within two kilometres of everything. Book Waikiki, pick your end of it based on how fast you expect to be, and set the alarm for half past three.

Where to stay: the three zones
Distances below are to Waikiki: 1.9km to the start, 1.8km to the finish, the point you actually have to reach, which is not always the start line.
Our pick
Central Waikiki
- To Waikiki: 1.9km to the start
- 1.9km to the start
- To finish
- 1.8km
- Price
- $$$
The obvious answer and, unusually, also the correct one. Waikiki sits in the middle of all three fixed points, which is not something most host cities manage.
What's available in WaikikiWorks because
- Almost exactly equidistant between the start and finish — under 2km to each
- 1.4km to the Expo at the Convention Center, so the compulsory pickup is a walk
- Deepest supply of any zone here, 503 properties for race week
- You can walk back from Kapiolani Park after finishing, in whatever state you are in
Costs you
- The busiest and priciest strip on Oahu, race or no race
- The Saturday Merrie Mile runs down Kalakaua Avenue, which is not a quiet night before a 3:30am alarm
- A 1.9km walk in the dark at four in the morning is still a 1.9km walk
Diamond Head end of Waikiki
- To Waikiki: 1.9km to the start
- Further from the start
- To finish
- Closest to Kapiolani Park
- Price
- $$$
Trade a longer dark walk out for a shorter hot walk back. Reasonable if you expect a slow finish, which at a race with no cut-off many people should.
What's available in Diamond HeadWorks because
- Nearest to the finish, which matters more here than at most races because of the heat
- Quieter end of the strip, away from the Merrie Mile route
- Kapiolani Park is your doorstep for the finisher tent and Finisher Monday
Costs you
- The longest walk to the 05:00 start of any Waikiki option
- Further from the Expo at the Convention Center
- Less to eat within walking distance the night before
Ala Moana and Kakaako
- To Waikiki: 1.9km to the start
- Closest to the start
- To finish
- 3.6km back from Kapiolani Park
- Price
- $$
The right answer only if you are fast enough to finish before the heat, in which case the shorter morning walk is a genuine gain.
What's available in Ala MoanaWorks because
- Nearest zone to the Ala Moana Boulevard start, the shortest 4am walk available
- 0.9km to the Expo, the closest of any option
- Generally cheaper than the Waikiki beachfront
Costs you
- 3.6km from the finish, and that walk happens in the low 80s
- Much less to do than Waikiki, and a longer trip to the beach
- Thinner stock than the Waikiki strip

Common questions
What time does the Honolulu Marathon start?
5:00 a.m. on Sunday 13 December 2026, on Ala Moana Boulevard. That is the earliest gun of any race we cover: Sydney is 6:30, Chicago 7:35, Twin Cities 8:00. Plan on an alarm somewhere around 3:30 and a walk in the dark.
Where does it start and finish?
It starts on Ala Moana Boulevard and finishes in Kapiolani Park, at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki. We measured the two points at 3.64km apart, which is the smallest start-to-finish gap of any point-to-point race on this site.
Is there a time limit?
No, and the organiser is proud of it. Their words: the JAL Honolulu Marathon is the only world-class marathon that allows all participants to finish, and there is no cut-off time. You must keep moving, and officials may remove anyone on safety grounds, but nobody is swept for being slow.
Is there an entry limit or a qualifying time?
Neither. The organiser states there are no qualifying times and no entry limits, and late entry is accepted at the Expo. It is one of the few big marathons you can decide to run quite late.
Can someone else collect my race packet?
No. Packet pickup at the Hawaii Convention Center Expo is mandatory and the organiser states that each runner must pick up their own packet, with no collection for friends or family. If you are travelling as a group, everyone has to make the trip.
Where should I stay?
Waikiki. We measured it at 1.94km from the Ala Moana start, 1.84km from the Kapiolani Park finish and 1.42km from the Expo — under two kilometres from all three fixed points of the weekend. Very few host cities put the obvious tourist district in the middle of everything, and this one does.
How hot does it get?
The organiser's own guidance is mid-60s Fahrenheit at the 5am start, climbing to the low 80s by 10:00 a.m. Because there is no cut-off, a large part of the field is still running then. The heat, not a sweeper bus, is the real constraint on a slow finish.
How hilly is the course?
Barely at all. The organiser describes it as mostly flat apart from Diamond Head, with the highest point on the whole course at 124 feet above sea level near mile 9. The difficulty here is heat and distance, not elevation.
Can I get a refund if I cannot travel?
Only if you bought booking protection at the time of registration. Entries are otherwise neither refundable nor deferrable, and claims are handled by the Refund Protect Group rather than the marathon, which states it cannot influence those decisions. Worth knowing before you book flights to Hawaii.
What about road closures?
The City and County of Honolulu's 2026 notice was not published when we checked in early August. What is fixed is the shape: an Ala Moana Boulevard start, a course out around Diamond Head and Hawaii Kai, and a Kapiolani Park finish, with the first 10K shared with the Start to Park 10k field.
How we verified this
Every timing and closure on this page was checked against the organiser's own published sources on the dates below, by H. Ahmad. Research and data collection are AI-assisted; every logistical fact is verified by a human against the official source before publication. We don't take logistics from other guides — courses and cutoffs change between editions, and second-hand data goes stale silently.
