The 2027 race is not the race you have run before

If you have done Two Oceans, set that memory aside. The organiser announced on 30 June 2026 that 2027 runs a substantially new format, and almost every planning assumption changes with it.

The half marathon moves to Saturday 3 April. The 56km ultra moves to Sunday 4 April. They used to share a morning; now each has its own day, with the ultra closing the week as the finale.

Around them sits an expanded Event Week from 31 March to 4 April: a Night Run on the Wednesday, the International Friendship Run on the Thursday, Trail Runs on the Friday, then the half and the ultra.

And the fields are much larger:

Event Was 2027 Change
Ultra Marathon (56km) 14,000 21,000 +50%
Half Marathon (21.1km) 17,000 21,000 +24%

Add the supporting events: 5,000 on the Night Run, 1,500 on the Friendship Run, 1,000 across the three Trail Run distances, and the published capacity for the week is 49,500 participants.

Every one of those events finishes at the same place.

Everything ends at UCT, all week

The UCT Rugby Fields in Rondebosch are the finish venue for the Trail Runs, the half and the ultra, and the organiser has confirmed UCT as the event home for 2027 and 2028 both.

That single fact does most of the accommodation work, because it converts a five-day, five-event week into one fixed point. We measured the candidates against it:

Zone To the UCT finish
Newlands 2.17 km
Rondebosch 2.25 km
Claremont 3.14 km
Cape Town city bowl 5.72 km
Constantia 9.29 km

The southern suburbs win, and not narrowly. Newlands and Rondebosch sit a little over two kilometres from the venue you will visit repeatedly; the city bowl is nearly three times that, on the other side of the mountain, and Constantia — which the route passes through — is nine kilometres away.

This is the opposite of the advice most Cape Town visitors are given, which sends everyone to the V&A Waterfront or the Atlantic seaboard. Those are the right answers for a holiday in Cape Town. They are the wrong answer for a week in which you finish at UCT up to three times.

It is no longer an Easter race

A quiet consequence of the new dates that will catch returning runners.

Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March. The Event Week runs 31 March to 4 April, the week after Easter. Two Oceans has long been associated with the Easter weekend, and a lot of accommodation habits, family plans and flight bookings are built around that association.

For 2027 they do not apply. If you have historically booked around Easter for this race, you are now booking a week later, into a period when Cape Town’s peak holiday demand has begun to ease. On balance that should help you rather than hurt you, but only if you notice.

Cape Town absorbs it; the southern suburbs may not

Checked on 4 August 2026, comparing race weekend with the following weekend:

Race weekend 2–5 Apr 2027 Control 9–12 Apr 2027
Properties in Cape Town 2,922 3,269

Eighty-nine per cent of ordinary supply still available. Cape Town has close to three thousand bookable properties and, like Tokyo or London, is large enough that even a 49,500-participant week does not empty it.

That headline number comes with a caveat this page should state clearly. It measures Cape Town as a whole, and the whole is dominated by the city bowl, the Atlantic seaboard and the outer suburbs. The area this guide actually recommends, Newlands and Rondebosch, within about two kilometres of UCT, is a small residential pocket with far less commercial accommodation than the beachfront.

So read the 89 per cent as: you will find a room in Cape Town. Do not read it as: you will find a room near the finish. Those are different claims, and only the first one is supported by the measurement.

Splitting the days creates something that did not exist before

The two flagship races used to share a morning, which meant you chose one. For 2027 the half is on Saturday and the ultra on Sunday, and that opens a door.

You can now do both. Twenty-one kilometres on the Saturday and fifty-six on the Sunday is seventy-seven kilometres across two days, a genuine back-to-back that was previously impossible because the two races overlapped.

The organiser has not, at the time of writing, announced a combined challenge entry or a medal for doing both, so treat it as two separate entries and two separate ballot outcomes rather than a packaged product. But the calendar now permits it, and at races that have made this change elsewhere: London’s 2027 Double, Marathon Weekend at Disney, the combined format becomes the thing a large minority of the field travels for.

For accommodation the implication is straightforward and worth planning around now: the split lengthens the trip. Under the old format you could fly in Thursday and out Sunday. For 2027, if you are running the half you are committed to Saturday, and if you are running the ultra you are committed to Sunday, and if you are doing anything else in the week you are committed from the Wednesday. A week that used to be a long weekend is now, for a meaningful number of people, a full five days.

Fifty-six kilometres is not a marathon

Worth stating plainly, because this site is otherwise about marathons and the distinction changes the day.

The Two Oceans flagship is a 56km ultra — thirty-five miles, roughly a third longer than a marathon. The practical consequences for where you sleep:

  • The day is much longer. Even a strong club runner is out for five to six hours; a mid-pack finisher considerably more. Whatever time the race starts, you are finishing well into the afternoon.
  • The walk back matters more than at any marathon. Two kilometres from UCT to Newlands is a pleasant stroll after a 10K and a genuinely unwelcome one after fifty-six kilometres over Southern Cross Drive. This is the strongest single argument for the southern suburbs over the city bowl.
  • Recovery day is not optional. Book the Monday night. A same-evening flight after an ultra is a decision people regret, and Cape Town is a long way from most places.

The route itself explains why the distance bites: the organiser describes it running through Claremont, Wynberg and Constantia and over Southern Cross Drive before returning through Newlands. This is not a flat coastal jog. The climbs come late, in the second half, when a marathon would already have finished.

What we are not telling you, and why

The organiser has published dates, capacities, entry routes, fees and venues for 2027. It has not published start times, and we are not going to guess at them.

That matters more here than usual. The ultra has historically gone off very early, but this is a race that has just moved its day, separated its two flagship events and increased its field by half. Every one of those changes is a reason a start time might move, and a start time carried over from a previous edition is exactly the kind of fact that ruins a race morning.

The same applies to closures: the City of Cape Town had not published a 2027 notice when we checked, which is unsurprising eight months out.

What is fixed and verified is the frame, the two-day format, the dates, the capacities, the UCT finish, and the entry routes below.

Entering, and the date that matters this week

The path in for 2027:

  • Blue Number Club members had a dedicated window, 15 to 22 July 2026.
  • The public ballot for the half and the ultra opens Wednesday 5 August 2026.
  • Night Run, International Friendship Run and Trail Run entries opened Monday 3 August 2026 — those are first-come rather than balloted, and the Trail Runs in particular have only 1,000 places across three distances.
  • International and Rest of Africa runners use a separate entry process from South African athletes.
  • Published fees for licensed South African athletes are R840 for the ultra and R450 for the half; the supporting events run R250 to R950.

If you are reading this at publication, the ballot opens tomorrow. And if the ballot does not go your way, the three supporting events are the cheapest way to be part of the week — small fields, first-come entry, and all finishing at the same UCT venue you would have finished at anyway.

Start times for the 2027 half and ultra are not published and have deliberately not been estimated. Historically the ultra has started very early; do not plan around a previous year's time. Entry fees quoted are for licensed South African athletes — international entrants use a separate process. The City of Cape Town had not published a 2027 closure notice when we checked on 4 August 2026.

Where to stay: the three zones

Distances below are to UCT Rugby Fields, the finish for every event of the week, the point you actually have to reach, which is not always the start line.

  • Our pick

    Newlands and Rondebosch

    To UCT Rugby Fields
    2.2km to the UCT finish
    To finish
    2.2km
    Price
    $$

The right answer for the race. Everything you have to reach across five days is within a couple of kilometres.

    Works because

    • Closest to the UCT finish fields, which host every event of the week
    • On the closing stretch of the ultra route, so you see the race from the doorstep
    • Leafy, quiet southern-suburbs base with good guesthouse stock
    • Far cheaper than the Atlantic seaboard or the city bowl

    Costs you

    • Limited hotel stock compared with the city. This is a residential area
    • Little to do in the evening beyond the local high streets
    • You are 5–6km from the city centre if the rest of your trip is there
    What's available in Newlands
  • Claremont

    To UCT Rugby Fields
    3.1km to the UCT finish
    To finish
    3.1km
    Price
    $$

A comfortable base with more to do. The extra kilometre costs little when the finish is the only fixed point.

    Works because

    • On the route itself, the course runs through Claremont
    • The best shopping and eating of the southern suburbs, so an easier week than Newlands
    • Still close to UCT and well connected south towards Constantia

    Costs you

    • A kilometre further from the finish than Newlands
    • Course closures run through it, so getting out by car on race mornings is awkward
    What's available in Claremont
  • Cape Town city bowl and V&A Waterfront

    To UCT Rugby Fields
    5.7km to UCT
    To finish
    5.7km
    Price
    $$$

Choose it for the holiday, not the race. Five events in five days all finishing at UCT is a lot of travelling from the city bowl.

    Works because

    • Vastly more hotel stock and everything a visitor wants from Cape Town
    • Right for a trip that is a holiday with a race attached
    • Best base if you are combining this with the Cape Town Marathon course area or the peninsula

    Costs you

    • 5.7km from the finish and further from the course, so every race day is a drive or a transfer
    • You are on the wrong side of the mountain from the entire event week
    • Most expensive of the three by a distance

Common questions

When is the Two Oceans Marathon 2027?

The Event Week runs 31 March to 4 April 2027. The half marathon is on Saturday 3 April and the 56km ultra on Sunday 4 April. This is a new format, the two flagship races now sit on separate days, with the ultra closing the week.

When do entries open, and how do I get in?

The public ballot for the half and the ultra opens on Wednesday 5 August 2026. Blue Number Club members had a dedicated window from 15 to 22 July 2026. Entries for the Night Run, International Friendship Run and Trail Runs opened on Monday 3 August 2026. There is a separate entry process for International and Rest of Africa runners.

How much bigger is the 2027 race?

Substantially. The ultra grows from 14,000 places to 21,000, a 50 per cent increase, and the half from 17,000 to 21,000. Across the five events of the week the organiser has published capacity for 49,500 participants.

Where does it start and finish?

Every event of the 2027 week finishes at the UCT Rugby Fields in Rondebosch, which the organiser has confirmed as the event home for both 2027 and 2028. The 2027 start points and start times have not yet been published, and we have not estimated them.

Where should I stay?

Newlands or Rondebosch, about 2.2km from the UCT finish by our measurement. The course runs through the southern suburbs and every event of the week ends at UCT, so a southern-suburbs base minimises travel across five days. The city bowl is 5.7km away and on the wrong side of the mountain for this race.

Is Cape Town hard to book for race week?

Less than you might expect. Checked on 4 August 2026, Cape Town had 2,922 properties available for race weekend against 3,269 for the following weekend: 89 per cent remaining. It is a large market. The scarcity is in the southern suburbs specifically, not in the city as a whole.

Does it still fall at Easter?

No, and this is worth knowing if you have run it before. Easter Sunday 2027 is 28 March, and the Event Week runs 31 March to 4 April, the week after. The race has traditionally been associated with the Easter weekend, so any accommodation habit built around that no longer applies.

What is the route?

The organiser describes it as running through Claremont, Wynberg and Constantia, over Southern Cross Drive and back through Newlands to the UCT finish fields in Rondebosch. It sits almost entirely in the southern suburbs and over the mountain passes, rather than in the city bowl.

What time does the ultra start?

Not published for 2027, and we have deliberately not estimated it. The ultra has historically started very early, but a race that has just changed its day and grown by half is exactly the kind that can change its start time too. Take it from the organiser's participant communications when they appear.

How we verified this

Every timing and closure on this page was checked against the organiser's own published sources on the dates below, by H. Ahmad. Research and data collection are AI-assisted; every logistical fact is verified by a human against the official source before publication. We don't take logistics from other guides — courses and cutoffs change between editions, and second-hand data goes stale silently.
