On the line
Running out of your zone risks disqualification
Start
You may drop back to a slower zone to run with someone. Moving forward is not permitted, and the organiser states it may mean disqualification without a race result.
Hard cutoff
One precinct, which removes most of the usual problems
Almost every guide on this site exists because a city has scattered the start, the finish and the expo across an awkward geography. The Gold Coast has not.
Start, finish, expo and race number collection all sit at the Broadwater Parklands race precinct on Marine Parade in Southport. One address, every fixed appointment of the weekend.
We measured the candidate bases against it:
| Zone | To the race precinct |
|---|---|
| Southport | 1.08 km |
| Main Beach | 1.71 km |
| Surfers Paradise | 3.72 km |
| Broadbeach | 7.04 km |
Southport at just over a kilometre is walkable at any hour. Main Beach at 1.71km is still comfortably walkable. Surfers Paradise, where the overwhelming majority of Gold Coast visitors stay — is 3.72 kilometres away, which is a tram ride or a taxi before a 6:15am wave, and the same journey again afterwards.
That is the entire accommodation argument, and it runs against the grain of every general Gold Coast recommendation you will read.
Your wave was decided months ago, by you
With the geography solved, the real constraint at the Gold Coast is administrative and it happens long before race weekend.
You give a predicted finishing time when you enter, and that number puts you into a lettered start zone printed on your race number. The 2026 bands, published by the organiser, ran like this for the marathon:
| Zone | Predicted finish |
|---|---|
| Seeded | sub 2:22 (M) / 2:52 (F) |
| Priority A / B | sub 2:32 / sub 2:50 (M) |
| A | 2:50 – 3:20 |
| B | 3:20:01 – 3:50 |
| C | 3:50:01 – 4:20 |
| D | 4:20:01 – 5:00 |
| E | 5:00:01 – 6:40 |
Those zones then map onto four waves — in 2026, 06:15, 06:25, 06:35 and 06:45, each with its own start gun and bunting held between them.
Two rules make this consequential rather than administrative.
You cannot move up. The organiser permits starting in a slower zone to accompany a friend or family member. Moving forward is not allowed, and the wording is unambiguous: anyone found deliberately running out of their designated start zone may be disqualified without a race result.
And you cannot change it late. All start zone selections and updates are made when completing your entry, through the Update your Entry portal, and must be done before entries close. There is no change at the expo and none on race morning.
So a predicted time typed casually into an entry form eight months out becomes a fixed feature of your race day. Give it the ten seconds of thought it deserves — particularly if you are between bands, where a slightly optimistic guess moves you a full ten minutes earlier and into a faster field.
The 6:15 wave and where you sleep
Put the wave structure next to the distances and the recommendation sharpens.
A Southport base at 1.08 kilometres means a fifteen-minute walk, whichever wave you are in. A Surfers Paradise base means a 3.7-kilometre journey — light rail or taxi — timed to land you at a precinct before a gun that may be as early as 06:15.
The Gold Coast light rail does connect the two, and it is a good system. But it is one more dependency on a morning that otherwise has none, and this site’s consistent position is that a walk with no failure mode beats a short ride with one.
The counter-argument is real and worth stating: most people do not come to the Gold Coast only to run. If you are travelling with family who want the beach, the restaurants and an apartment with a kitchen, Surfers Paradise is where those things are, and 212 properties against Southport’s much thinner stock is a meaningful difference. In that case take Surfers, test the tram on the Saturday, and leave earlier than you think you need to.
What race weekend costs — with one honest caveat
Checked on 4 August 2026, comparing race weekend with a control weekend later in July:
| Race weekend 2–5 Jul 2027 | Control 23–26 Jul 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
| Properties in Surfers Paradise | 212 | 280 |
Seventy-six per cent remaining. Six properties appeared in both searches:
| Property | Race weekend | Control | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novotel Surfers Paradise | A$1,508 | A$732 | 2.06× |
| Surfers Paradise Cavill Pool | A$1,859 | A$963 | 1.93× |
| Circle on Cavill (GC Luxury) | A$2,352 | A$1,353 | 1.74× |
| H Luxury Residence | A$2,947 | A$1,720 | 1.71× |
| Circle On Cavill (Holiday Paradise) | A$2,695 | A$1,729 | 1.56× |
| H Star Residences | A$2,629 | A$2,629 | 1.00× |
Median 1.72×.
The caveat matters here more than at most races on this site. Early July falls inside the Queensland school holidays, and the Gold Coast is Queensland’s primary family holiday destination. Our control weekend of 23–26 July sits after that period. So an unknown share of that 1.72× is seasonal demand rather than the marathon, and we cannot separate the two from availability data alone.
Read it as: race weekend costs roughly 70 per cent more than a late-July weekend, for reasons that include but are not limited to the race. That is a weaker claim than we can make for Berlin or Valencia, and it would be dishonest to present it as anything stronger.
A linear city, which changes what a hotel is worth
The Gold Coast is unusual among host cities: it is essentially a strip. Beach on one side, hinterland on the other, and everything strung along a single coastal axis from Southport down through Main Beach, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.
The course follows that axis. Which means something you cannot say about most races: where you stay determines whether the race passes your door.
For a runner travelling alone this is a curiosity. For anyone bringing family it is the difference between a supporter having a pleasant morning and a supporter spending it working out how to cross a closed road.
- Southport puts you at the precinct itself, so supporters see the start, the finish and the closing kilometres without moving.
- Main Beach and Surfers Paradise sit on the course, so a supporter can watch from near the accommodation and then travel to the finish.
- Broadbeach, at 7.04km from the precinct, is far enough down the strip that it becomes a genuine journey in both directions.
The linearity cuts the other way too. A strip city with the coast road closed has very few alternative routes, so a car parked on the wrong side of the course on race morning is effectively parked for the duration. If you are driving in, park on the hinterland side of your accommodation rather than the beach side, and check the road-closure map when it is published rather than assuming a local diversion.
Why the race is in July, and what that gets you
Worth stating for anyone outside Australia looking at a July date and picturing heat.
July is winter in Queensland. The Gold Coast’s winter is mild and dry rather than cold, and that combination — flat coastal course, stable conditions, minimal wind at dawn — is precisely why this race has the reputation it does as a personal-best and qualifying course. The organiser participates in the Abbott World Marathon Majors Age Group World Rankings and runs a Good For Age qualifying programme alongside general entry, which tells you what kind of field it attracts.
Two practical consequences for the booking:
A 06:15 wave in July is genuinely cold at the start, in a way an Australian beach destination does not lead you to expect. You will be standing at Broadwater Parklands before dawn. Throwaway layers are worth the same here as at Loch Ness, and being a kilometre from your room rather than four makes shedding them at the last moment practical.
And it is a school-holiday period, which is the confound discussed above and also a reason the strip is busy with families rather than runners. If you want quiet, Southport gives you more of it than Surfers will.
More than usual, because the timing is awkward. When we checked on 4 August 2026, the organiser’s site was still presenting the completed 2026 edition — the 2026 results were up, the 2026 event guide was still linked, and the 2027 participant pages had not gone live.
What is confirmed: the 2027 dates — half marathon Saturday 3 July, marathon Sunday 4 July, and the Broadwater Parklands precinct, which the organiser has used consistently.
What is not: 2027 wave times, 2027 road closures and 2027 entry dates. Every clock time on this page is the 2026 published figure and is labelled as such. The wave structure and the zone bands have been stable, but a start time you plan around should come from the 2027 pages when they appear.
This is the same position the Edinburgh guide takes, and for the same reason: the structure of a race is durable, its timetable is not, and carrying a stale start time forward is the single most damaging thing a guide like this can do.

The organiser's site was still showing the completed 2026 edition when we checked on 4 August 2026. The 2027 dates (half Saturday 3 July, marathon Sunday 4 July) and the Broadwater Parklands precinct are confirmed, but wave times, road closures and entry dates for 2027 are not. Where to stay: the three zones
Distances below are to Broadwater Parklands, start, finish and expo in one place, the point you actually have to reach, which is not always the start line.
Our pick
Southport
- To Broadwater Parklands
- 1.08km to Broadwater Parklands
- To finish
- 1.08km
- Price
- $$
The right race base. Everything the weekend asks of you is inside a kilometre, and a 06:15 wave rewards that more than a beach view does.
What's available in SouthportWorks because
- Closest to the race precinct — about a kilometre, so start, finish and expo are all a walk
- Cheaper than Surfers Paradise and much quieter the night before a 06:15 wave
- You walk home from the finish rather than joining the tram
- Australia Fair and the local centre cover everything you need for a race weekend
Costs you
- Far less accommodation stock than Surfers Paradise, and less of it on the OTAs
- Quieter in the evenings, with less choice for a family holiday
- Not the beachfront most visitors come to the Gold Coast for
Main Beach
- To Broadwater Parklands
- 1.71km to the precinct
- To finish
- 1.71km
- Price
- $$$
The comfortable compromise, a beach base that is still a walk from the start. Book it early because there is not much of it.
What's available in Main BeachWorks because
- Still walkable to the precinct at under two kilometres
- Beachfront and Broadwater on your doorstep, which Southport is not
- Quieter and more residential than Surfers Paradise
Costs you
- Pricier than Southport for a marginal difference in convenience
- Thinner stock than Surfers, so it books out earlier
Surfers Paradise
- To Broadwater Parklands
- 3.72km to the precinct
- To finish
- 3.72km
- Price
- $$$
Choose it if the trip is a family holiday with a marathon attached. As a runner's base it adds a journey the race does not require.
What's available in Surfers ParadiseWorks because
- By far the deepest supply on the Gold Coast — 212 properties for race week
- Everything a holiday wants: beach, restaurants, apartments with kitchens
- On the light rail, which connects to the Southport precinct
Costs you
- 3.7km from the start, so a 06:15 wave means a tram or a taxi in the dark
- Loudest part of the coast on a Friday and Saturday night
- You return from the finish on tired legs, in the opposite direction to the crowd

Common questions
When is the Gold Coast Marathon 2027?
The half marathon is on Saturday 3 July 2027 and the marathon on Sunday 4 July 2027, at the Broadwater Parklands race precinct in Southport. When we checked in early August 2026 the organiser's site was still displaying the completed 2026 edition, so 2027 start times were not yet published.
How do the start zones work?
You give a predicted finishing time when you enter, and that puts you in a lettered zone printed on your race number. The 2026 bands ran Seeded and Priority above Zone A, then A at 2:50–3:20, B to 3:50, C to 4:20, D to 5:00 and E through to 6:40. It is a wave start, so your zone decides your gun.
Can I change my start zone later?
Only before entries close. The organiser states that all start zone selections and updates are made when completing entry and must be done via the Update your Entry portal before entries close. There is no expo change and none on race morning, which makes the predicted time you type in months earlier a real decision.
What time does the marathon start?
In 2026 there were four waves: 06:15 for Seeded, Priority and Zone A; 06:25 for Zone B; 06:35 for Zone C; and 06:45 for Zones D and E, each with its own gun. Treat those as precedent: 2027 times had not been published when we checked.
Can I move up to a faster wave to run with a friend?
No, but you can move back. The organiser permits starting in a slower zone than the one on your number to accompany friends or family, and states that anyone found deliberately running out of their designated zone may be disqualified without a race result.
Where does it start and finish?
Both at the Broadwater Parklands race precinct on Marine Parade, Southport. The expo and race number collection are on the same site, so a single location covers every fixed appointment of the weekend, which is unusual and makes the accommodation decision simple.
Where should I stay?
Southport, about 1.08km from the precinct by our measurement. Main Beach is 1.71km and also walkable. Surfers Paradise, where most visitors stay, is 3.72km away and turns a 06:15 wave into a tram ride in the dark.
How busy is race weekend for accommodation?
Checked on 4 August 2026, Surfers Paradise had 212 properties available for race weekend against 280 for a control weekend later in July, 76 per cent remaining, with a median 1.72 times the price across six matched properties. One caveat: early July falls in Queensland school holidays, so some of that premium is seasonal rather than caused by the marathon.
What is the Gold Coast Double?
The Fixx Nutrition Gold Coast Double is 63.3km, the half marathon on the Saturday plus the full marathon on the Sunday. It is a separate entry, and if you are doing it your weekend has two race mornings at the same precinct rather than one.
How we verified this
Every timing and closure on this page was checked against the organiser's own published sources on the dates below, by H. Ahmad. Research and data collection are AI-assisted; every logistical fact is verified by a human against the official source before publication. We don't take logistics from other guides — courses and cutoffs change between editions, and second-hand data goes stale silently.

Bunting is held between waves and each wave has its own start gun. Marathon zone bands by predicted time: Seeded sub 2:22 (M) / 2:52 (F); Priority A sub 2:32 (M) / 3:02 (F) and Priority B sub 2:50 (M) / 3:10 (F); Zone A 2:50–3:20 (M) and 3:10–3:20 (F); Zone B 3:20:01–3:50; Zone C 3:50:01–4:20; Zone D 4:20:01–5:00; Zone E 5:00:01–6:40.
