Half past four in the morning

The Walt Disney World Marathon starts at 4:30 a.m. Eastern, and that single fact reorganises everything else on this page.

It is the earliest gun of any race on this site. Honolulu goes at 05:00. Cape Town’s park-and-ride does not even open until 05:30. Sydney, which this site describes as an early race, starts two hours later at 06:30.

Work backwards from 04:30 and a realistic alarm is somewhere around 02:30, allowing for resort transport, a walk to the start corrals, and the ordinary business of getting several tens of thousands of people into position in the dark. You are not getting up early for this race. You are getting up in the middle of the night, and arguably not sleeping at all.

Everything that follows, where to stay, whether to be on property, how much a walkable room is worth — is a consequence of that number.

The transport is Disney’s, and that is the real question

The race takes place entirely inside Walt Disney World Resort. Start and finish are both in the EPCOT area, so there is no point-to-point problem, no closed harbour, no bus with a final departure out to a distant start town.

Instead there is a subtler dependency: the transport that gets you to the start is Disney’s, and it is built around resort guests. That makes the accommodation question binary in a way it is at almost no other race. You are either inside the system or you are driving yourself.

We measured what that means:

Zone To EPCOT
EPCOT resort area (BoardWalk, Yacht & Beach Club, Swan & Dolphin) 1.09 km
Disney Springs area 3.07 km
Magic Kingdom resort area 5.81 km
International Drive (off property) 12.79 km
Kissimmee (off property) 16.69 km

At 04:30, that first row is the whole argument. A kilometre is walkable, even at three in the morning, even nervous. Everything else on property means standing at a resort bus stop in the dark with a large number of other people, relying on a schedule; and everything off property means driving twelve to seventeen kilometres into road closures having set an alarm around two.

The consistent principle across this entire site is that the arrangement with no failure mode beats the one that is merely close. At a 04:30 start that principle is worth more than it is anywhere else, and the EPCOT resort area is the only place it applies.

What we will not tell you, and why

runDisney publishes race-morning transport times — resort departure windows, start-area arrival deadlines, parking arrangements — only in its Digital Expo & Event Guide, and the 2027 edition was not available when we checked on 4 August 2026.

Specific bus times for this weekend circulate very widely on forums, blogs and travel-agent sites. Some are probably accurate. We are not repeating them, because they are not published by the organiser for this edition, and a transport time is exactly the kind of fact that ends a race when it is wrong.

What is officially established is the shape: a 04:30 start inside the resort, with Disney operating the transport. Get the Event Guide when it appears and take your departure time from that.

The finding that surprised us: this is a cheap weekend

Every instinct says a Disney marathon in January is an expensive week. The measurement says otherwise, and it is the most counterintuitive result we have recorded.

Checked on 4 August 2026, comparing race weekend with an ordinary weekend later the same month. We used 22–25 January deliberately: the nearer control, 15–18 January, falls on Martin Luther King Jr weekend, and comparing a marathon against a federal holiday weekend would have been meaningless.

Race weekend 8–11 Jan 2027 Control 22–25 Jan 2027
Properties in Lake Buena Vista 191 199

Ninety-six per cent of ordinary supply still available. And the prices, for the same six properties across both weekends:

Property Race weekend Control Multiple
Orlando World Center Marriott $728 $1,084 0.67×
Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista $511 $635 0.80×
Wyndham Lake Buena Vista $447 $516 0.87×
Wyndham Garden Lake Buena Vista $382 $426 0.90×
Sheraton Vistana One Bedroom $1,613 $1,613 1.00×
Sheraton Vistana Resort Villas $574 $458 1.25×

Four of the six were cheaper on marathon weekend, with a median of 0.88×. One large resort was a third cheaper.

The explanation is the calendar rather than the race. Early January sits in the trough between the Christmas and New Year peak and the Martin Luther King Jr weekend, which is one of the genuinely quiet windows in Orlando’s year. And a marathon field, however large it feels on the start line, is small against a market with tens of thousands of rooms.

So the practical instruction inverts the advice on almost every other page here: you do not need to book early to protect against price. Book early to secure the EPCOT-area resorts, which are scarce for a different reason. There are only a handful of them and they are the ones every experienced runDisney participant wants. The rest of Orlando will still be there in November, and it will be cheap.

The deadlines that are not on race day

Three administrative dates matter more here than the gun does, and two of them fall months before you travel.

Proof of time closed on 3 August 2026. It sets your start group, and you only need it if you expect to finish in five hours or less. It must come from an officially timed race on a USATF certified course dated between 1 January 2024 and 3 August 2026 — no relays, trail runs, self-timed efforts or virtual runs. After that date no start group changes are made at all, and incomplete or unverifiable data puts you in the last group.

The expo closes at 15:00 on the Saturday. Bib collection is compulsory and must happen at least one day before your first event. For 2027 the expo runs Wednesday 6 January 10:00–20:00, Thursday and Friday 12:00–19:00, and Saturday 9 January 11:00–15:00. A late Saturday arrival for a Sunday marathon does not work. Neither does sending someone else, and merchandise you have bought must also be collected before the expo ends, because nothing is shipped afterwards.

Nothing is refundable and nothing transfers. Registration fees, commemorative items and event purchases are all non-refundable. Bibs cannot be transferred between individuals, between event weekends, or to sold-out events, and attempting to sell or trade one results in cancellation, disqualification, removal without refund and possible exclusion from future runDisney events.

That combination — fly to Florida, non-refundable entry, no transfer, no deferral — is the strongest argument on this page for a refundable room. The entry risk cannot be managed. The accommodation risk can, and here it costs almost nothing to do so given how soft the market is.

If you are doing Dopey or Goofy

Two challenge formats change the shape of the week considerably.

Goofy’s Race and a Half is the half marathon on the Saturday plus the marathon on the Sunday. Dopey is all four races, 5K, 10K, half and marathon, across Thursday to Sunday. Both follow full-marathon proof-of-time rules.

For accommodation this matters in one specific way: Dopey means your first event is on the Thursday, so your bib must be collected by Wednesday, and you face four consecutive pre-dawn mornings rather than one. The value of a walkable EPCOT- area room multiplies accordingly. You are making that journey four times, not once, and the fourth is on legs that have already covered 48.8 kilometres.

What we cannot tell you yet

The Digital Expo & Event Guide for 2027 is not published, and it carries the race-morning transport windows, start-area arrival deadlines and parking detail. Disney’s own resort site refused our automated request, so we have not been able to confirm resort-side arrangements independently either.

What is fixed and verified is the frame: Sunday 10 January 2027, 04:30 Eastern, inside Walt Disney World Resort. Sold out. Proof of time closed. Expo compulsory and ending at three on the Saturday afternoon. Nothing refundable, nothing transferable.

And underneath all of that, a market where the marathon weekend costs less than an ordinary one, which is not a sentence this site gets to write very often.

Where to stay: the three zones

Distances below are to EPCOT, and whether your hotel is inside Disney's transport system, the point you actually have to reach, which is not always the start line.

  • Our pick

EPCOT resort area: BoardWalk, Yacht and Beach Club, Swan and Dolphin

    To EPCOT
    About 1.1km to EPCOT
    To finish
    Same
    Price
    $$$$

The right answer if the budget allows. At a 04:30 start, being able to walk is worth more than it is at any other race on this site.

    Works because

    • Around a kilometre from the start and finish, the only zone where walking is realistic at 3am
    • Removes the single biggest dependency of the weekend, which is a bus you do not control
    • You walk back after finishing rather than queueing for resort transport with several thousand others
    • Inside Disney's transport system for the expo trip as well

    Costs you

    • The most expensive accommodation on property
    • Books out earliest for marathon weekend, and Disney resort rooms are not on every OTA
    • Still a very early morning — walkable does not mean short
    What's available in Epcot
  • Other Walt Disney World resorts

    To EPCOT
    3–6km, on Disney's own transport
    To finish
    Same
    Price
    $$$

The sensible middle. Being on property is the important decision; which resort is a budget question.

    Works because

    • Inside Disney's transport system, which is the thing that actually matters here
    • Wide range of price points, from the value resorts upward
    • Disney Springs area sits about 3km from EPCOT; the Magic Kingdom resorts about 6km

    Costs you

    • You are dependent on a resort bus in the small hours, and the timings are not published until the Event Guide appears
    • Queues at the resort bus stops on marathon morning are part of the experience
    • No walking fallback if you miss the last departure
What's available in Walt Disney World Resort
  • Off property: Kissimmee and International Drive

    To EPCOT
12.8–16.7km, and you are driving it yourself
    To finish
    Same
    Price
    $$

Only if you are travelling as a family, have a car, and someone who is not racing can drive. As a runner's base it converts an easy race into a hard one.

    Works because

    • Materially cheaper, with enormous supply across the Orlando area
    • Better for a family holiday that is not entirely about the race
    • Plenty of large apartments and villas at prices no Disney resort matches

    Costs you

    • You drive to a 04:30 start, in the dark, into road closures, having set an alarm around 02:00
    • You are outside Disney's transport system entirely, the buses are for resort guests
    • Parking arrangements for race morning are published only in the Event Guide
    What's available in Kissimmee

Common questions

What time does the Walt Disney World Marathon start?

4:30 a.m. Eastern on Sunday 10 January 2027. That is the earliest gun of any race we cover — half an hour before Honolulu, an hour before Cape Town's park-and-ride even opens, and two hours before Sydney. Plan an alarm around 2:30 a.m.

Where should I stay for the Disney World Marathon?

On Disney property, and ideally the EPCOT resort area, BoardWalk, the Yacht and Beach Club, or the Swan and Dolphin, which we measured at about 1.1km from EPCOT. That is the only zone where walking to a 4:30 a.m. start is realistic, and walking is the one arrangement that cannot be delayed.

Do I need to stay at a Disney resort?

Not formally, but the transport system is built around resort guests. Off-property options in Kissimmee and on International Drive sit 16.7km and 12.8km from EPCOT by our measurement, which means driving yourself to a 4:30 a.m. start through road closures. If you are running rather than holidaying, on-property is the materially easier choice.

How does race transportation work?

runDisney publishes race-morning transport times only in its Digital Expo & Event Guide, which was not available for 2027 when we checked. Specific bus times circulate widely on forums and blogs. We are not repeating them, because they are not organiser-published for this edition. Check the Event Guide when it appears.

When do I have to collect my bib?

At the runDisney Health & Fitness Expo, at least one day before your first event. For 2027 it runs Wednesday 6 January 10:00–20:00, Thursday and Friday 12:00–19:00, and Saturday 9 January 11:00–15:00 only. There is no race-morning collection, and merchandise must also be collected before the expo ends because nothing is shipped afterwards.

What is proof of time and when is the deadline?

It sets your start group. You only need it if you expect to finish in 5 hours or less; over that, it is not required. It must come from an officially timed race on a USATF certified course dated between 1 January 2024 and 3 August 2026 — no relays, trail runs, self-timed or virtual runs. The deadline is 3 August 2026 and no start group changes are made after it.

Is the 2027 race sold out, and can I buy someone's place?

It is sold out, and no. Bibs are not transferable between individuals, between event weekends, or to sold-out events. Selling, trading or transferring one results in cancellation, disqualification, removal without a refund, and possible exclusion from future runDisney events.

Can I get a refund if I cannot travel?

No. runDisney states plainly that registration fees, commemorative items and event-related purchases are non-refundable, and entries cannot be deferred to another weekend. For a race most people fly to and book a hotel around, that is worth knowing before you commit to the flights.

What is Goofy's Race and a Half, and the Dopey Challenge?

Goofy is the half marathon plus the marathon across the Saturday and Sunday. Dopey is all four races, 5K, 10K, half and marathon, across Thursday to Sunday. Both follow full-marathon proof-of-time rules, and Dopey in particular means collecting your bib by the Wednesday and running four consecutive early mornings.

Is marathon weekend an expensive time to visit Orlando?

No. It is one of the cheaper ones. Checked on 4 August 2026, four of six Lake Buena Vista properties were cheaper on race weekend than on an ordinary late-January weekend, with a median of 0.88 times. Early January sits between the Christmas peak and the Martin Luther King Jr weekend, and the marathon is too small to move a market this size.

How we verified this

Every timing and closure on this page was checked against the organiser's own published sources on the dates below, by H. Ahmad. Research and data collection are AI-assisted; every logistical fact is verified by a human against the official source before publication. We don't take logistics from other guides — courses and cutoffs change between editions, and second-hand data goes stale silently.
