Philadelphia Marathon has no race-morning bib pickup, your hotel has to work for two addresses

Aerial view of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Eakins Oval, the start, finish and secure zone all sit on this stretch of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Your race morning, in order

The sequence that decides where you should sleep. Steps markedhard cutoff cannot be recovered from.

  1. Fri 12:00

Expo opens: and for some of you this is compulsory

Pennsylvania Convention Center Hall F, 12th & Arch

Open 12:00–21:00 on Friday. Half marathon runners and everyone entered in a challenge must collect their bib today. There is no Saturday option for them and no packet mailing.

    Hard cutoff

  2. Sat 07:00

    Half marathon starts

22nd Street & Benjamin Franklin Parkway

Wheelchairs 06:55. Same start line and the same secure zone as Sunday, so if you are running the challenge you go through all of this twice.

  3. Sat 09:00–17:00

Last opportunity to collect a marathon bib

    Pennsylvania Convention Center Hall F

Marathon runners may collect Friday or Saturday. After the expo closes on Saturday there is no further pickup anywhere, including race morning.

    Hard cutoff

  4. Sat 11:00

    Rothman 8K starts

    25th Street & Kelly Drive

A different start line from the marathon and half, and a second day of closures around the Parkway and Kelly Drive.

  5. Sun 05:00

    Security checkpoints open

Eight checkpoints around the Parkway and Eakins Oval

Two hours before the gun. Every person is screened by walk-through or hand-held magnetometer, and every item carried in is subject to search. Entry is not permitted via Martin Luther King Drive.

  6. Sun 05:00

    Gear check opens

    South side of Eakins Oval

Free, but clear bags only, and your bag needs the event-issued tag torn from your bib, which you can only have if you went to the expo.

  7. Before 08:00

Bib required to get in at all

    Checkpoint entrances

Only athletes, staff, guides, wheelchair handlers and emergency personnel enter the secure zone before 08:00, and athletes must show the race-day bib. Wear it on your outermost layer before you join the queue.

  8. Sun 06:55

    Push rim wheelchairs away

    Benjamin Franklin Parkway

  9. Sun 07:00

Marathon starts: and it does not wait for the queue

2200 block of Benjamin Franklin Parkway

The organiser states plainly that the start will not be delayed because of lines at security checkpoints. Your screening time is your problem, not theirs.

    Hard cutoff

  10. Sun 08:00

    Spectators finally admitted

    North and south viewing areas

Anyone supporting you cannot be inside the secure zone before 08:00, so they will not see your start. Agree a meeting point outside the perimeter in advance.

  11. +7 hours

    Finish closes

    Benjamin Franklin Parkway

Seven hours for the marathon, with a 16 minute per mile pace required throughout. Generous by big-city standards.

The decision is made on Friday, not Sunday

Most marathon guides treat the expo as a chore you fit in somewhere. At Philadelphia it is a hard constraint, and it governs your booking more than the start time does.

There is no race day packet pickup. Not at Eakins Oval, not at the start line, not for anyone. The organiser says so four separate times across its own FAQ, in capitals, and adds that packets cannot be mailed. Marathon runners must collect on the Friday or the Saturday at the Health & Fitness Expo. Half marathon runners must collect on the Friday, because their race is on Saturday morning. Anyone entered in one of the four challenges: Patriot, Independence, Liberty Bell, Freedom — must also collect everything on the Friday.

So for a large share of the field, the weekend does not begin on Saturday morning. It begins on Friday, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, between noon and nine in the evening. That is a third night of accommodation for anyone travelling in, and it is not optional.

Two appointments, two addresses, 1.85 kilometres apart

Here is the geometry that nobody publishes.

The expo is at Pennsylvania Convention Center Hall F, 12th and Arch Streets. The start and finish are on the 2200 block of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, just east of Eakins Oval. Measured between them, those two points are 1.85 kilometres apart, on opposite sides of Center City.

Almost every “where to stay in Philadelphia” recommendation optimises for one of them and quietly loses the other. Run the numbers on the obvious candidates and the pattern is stark:

  • Logan Square — 0.94km to the start, 0.94km to the expo
  • Rittenhouse Square — 1.70km to the start, 1.17km to the expo
  • Market East / Convention Center — 1.85km to the start, 0.38km to the expo
  • University City — roughly 1.5km to the start, 1.87km to the expo

Logan Square is the only zone where both numbers are under a kilometre, and it is under a kilometre for both because it sits almost exactly on the midpoint of the line between them. That is not a coincidence you can replicate by picking a nice neighbourhood. It is the answer to a specific question this race asks and others do not.

The Market East trap is worth naming, because it is the one a sensible person falls into. Staying by the Convention Center makes the Friday errand trivial — four hundred metres, and leaves you with the longest walk in Center City to a start line that has a gun. The expo is open for nine hours across two days. The gun goes once, at 07:00. Solve for the gun.

The start line is a security perimeter

The second thing Philadelphia does differently is wrap its start in something closer to airport screening than a corral system.

On both Saturday and Sunday, the start and finish area along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and Eakins Oval is a secure zone. There are eight named entry checkpoints. Every person entering is screened by walk-through or hand-held magnetometer, and every item carried in is subject to search. Entry is not permitted via Martin Luther King Drive at all, which catches people approaching from the west along the river.

Checkpoints open at 05:00, for a 07:00 start. Before 08:00 only athletes, event staff, guides, wheelchair handlers and emergency personnel may enter, and athletes have to show the race-day bib to get through. Fasten it to the front of your outermost layer before you join the queue, because security cross-checks the bib against the race being run that day.

Then there is the sentence that should shape your whole morning, published by the organiser without hedging:

The start of the race will not be delayed due to lines at security checkpoints.

That is unusually direct, and it transfers the entire risk of the queue onto you. It also explains the two-hour gap between the gate opening and the gun. The window is not generous, it is calibrated, and it is calibrated for a field that in 2026 is the largest the race has ever had.

Clear bags only, and what that does to a November morning

The bag policy follows from the perimeter and it is stricter than most runners expect. Only clear bags are permitted in the secure zone, for athletes and spectators alike. Backpacks, handbags and shoulder bags of any kind are prohibited. So is anything bulkier than 12 by 12 by 6 inches, and any container that holds more than a litre.

Hydration vests deserve a specific warning. You may not bring a pre-filled vest through a checkpoint. An empty vest must be carried, not worn, and security will check that the bladders are empty. Arrive with a full vest and you will be pulled out of the line, sent away from the entry point to empty it, and made to rejoin the back of the queue — at which point the sentence above starts to matter.

Gear check itself is free and sits on the south side of Eakins Oval, open from 05:00 to 15:00 on marathon Sunday. It takes clear bags only, and your bag needs the event-issued tag torn from your bib. That tag is the quiet link back to the first section of this page: no expo trip, no tag, no gear check.

The practical consequence for a late-November morning in Philadelphia is that you are standing outside in the dark with a clear plastic bag and whatever you are prepared to throw away. Discarded clothing at the start is collected and donated to the Salvation Army, which is the organiser’s polite way of saying plan to bin a layer. Warming tents are provided. The shorter your walk in, the less of this you have to solve, which is the argument for Logan Square restated in physical terms.

Walking is the plan, not the fallback

The organiser’s own travel advice is that “Center City is compact and very walkable”, and on race morning that is not a pleasantry, it is the operating assumption.

SEPTA runs two subway lines, Regional Rail and buses, and the organiser names routes 7, 32, 38, 43 and 48 as serving the Museum area. Fares are currently $2.90 on Bus and Metro and $5.00 to $13.00 on Regional Rail. All of that is useful for the expo trip on Friday and for getting in from the airport or 30th Street Station.

For the start itself it is a weaker plan than it looks. Race-weekend detours are published close to the date rather than months ahead: SEPTA’s alerts page carried no marathon notice in early August, and the closures that force those detours are the same ones that stop a vehicle getting near the Parkway. A bus that is running a diversion you have not read about, at 05:30 on a Sunday, is not a plan. Walking has no failure mode.

It sold out earlier than it ever has

On 24 July 2026 the organisers announced that the marathon and the half had both sold out — the earliest in the race’s 33-year history. That happened after an additional 3,000 places were added for 2026, and the marathon still went roughly four weeks earlier than the previous year, the half a month earlier. Race Weekend 2026 anticipates 40,000 participants from around 60 countries.

Set that against the supply actually available for the nights of 20 to 23 November 2026, checked on 3 August:

  • Logan Square — 7 properties
  • University City — 12 properties
  • Center City (wider district) — 154 properties
  • Rittenhouse Square — 381 properties

The zone that solves the problem has seven. Booking.com’s districts overlap, so treat these as relative rather than absolute, but the ratio is the point, and the ratio is roughly fifty to one between the best-located zone and the deepest one.

There is also an official housing programme with two dates worth diarising. Rooms you are holding and no longer need should be released by 13 October 2026, after which hotels charge a night’s room and tax for late cancellations and no-shows. The housing website closes entirely on 3 November 2026 at 5:00 pm EST. One caution from checking these directly: the organiser’s page labels 13 October as a Thursday and 3 November as a Wednesday, and both are Tuesdays in 2026. Go by the dates, not the weekdays.

What we are not telling you yet

The City of Philadelphia’s 2026 road-closure and parking release had not been published as of 3 August 2026. The Office of Special Events issues it in the weeks before race weekend, and until it exists we are not going to guess at street-by-street timings that could strand you.

The same applies to corrals. Assignments are made on the finish time you submitted, you can revise that time until 20 October, and the 2026 corral bands are due in November 2026. The bands published for 2025 ran from an elite corral through A at sub-2:59:59 down to H at 4:50 and over, and the organiser labels them illustrative, so do we.

What will not change is the structure, and the structure is the whole story here. Two appointments in two places 1.85 kilometres apart. No bib on race morning, ever. A gate that opens at 05:00, a gun at 07:00, and a written promise that the second will not wait for the first.

Book at Logan Square if the city will let you. Book at Rittenhouse if it will not. Either way, arrive on Friday and plan to walk.

Where to stay: the four zones

Distances below are to Logan Square, midway between the start checkpoints and the expo, the point you actually have to reach, which is not always the start line.

  • Our pick

    Logan Square & the Parkway

    To Logan Square
You are the decisive point: 0.9km to the start
    To finish
    0.9km
    Price
    $$$

The correct answer and the hardest to get. If one of the seven is available and you have a bib, book it before you finish reading this.

    Works because

    • The only zone within a kilometre of BOTH anchors — 0.94km to the start and 0.94km to the expo
    • Every trip the weekend forces on you is a walk, which is the only mode that reliably works
    • You are already inside the Parkway area when the checkpoints open at 05:00
    • Walk back to your own bed from the finish, which after 26.2 miles in November matters

    Costs you

    • Almost nothing here — 7 properties on Booking for race week, the thinnest of any zone
    • What exists is large-hotel stock at race-weekend prices
    • You are inside the closure footprint, so a car is a liability all weekend
    What's available in Logan Square
  • Rittenhouse Square

    To Logan Square
    1.7km to the start
    To finish
    1.7km
    Price
    $$$

The realistic answer for most people. Accept the walk, leave earlier than feels necessary, and do not plan on being driven.

    Works because

    • By far the deepest supply — 381 properties for race week, so there is almost always something
    • 1.17km to the expo, so the Friday trip is short and the Sunday walk is manageable
    • The best eating and the best pre-race evening in Center City, which Logan Square cannot match

    Costs you

    • 1.7km to the checkpoints at 05:30 in late November, in the dark and the cold
    • Race-weekend pricing is real here — three-night totals were commonly four figures when checked
    • Far enough that a taxi is tempting, and taxis are exactly what the closures remove
    What's available in Rittenhouse Square
  • Market East & the Convention Center

    To Logan Square
    1.85km to the start
    To finish
    1.85km
    Price
    $$

Tempting and slightly backwards. The expo has a nine-hour window on Friday; the start has a gun. Solve for the gun.

    Works because

    • 0.4km to the expo. You can collect a bib in a lunch break, which is the whole Friday problem solved
    • Good supply, with 154 properties across the wider Center City district
    • Best connected zone for arriving by rail, and closest to the Market–Frankford and Broad Street lines

    Costs you

    • The furthest of any Center City zone from the start — 1.85km, and it is the trip that has a hard deadline
    • Optimises the appointment that is flexible and sacrifices the one that is not
    • Least atmospheric part of Center City for a race weekend
    What's available in Center City
  • University City

    To Logan Square
Across the Schuylkill, roughly 1.5km to the start
    To finish
    Same
    Price
    $$

The budget option, and defensible if you are arriving by train and travelling light. Check which bridges are open before you commit.

    Works because

    • Clearly the cheapest zone checked, with entries well under half Center City rates
    • Close to 30th Street Station, which is 0.95km from the start — good if you arrive by Amtrak
    • Quieter, and you are outside the closure footprint rather than inside it

    Costs you

    • You cross the river on race morning, and the course itself runs through University City
    • Very thin supply — 12 properties for race week
    • 1.87km from the expo, so the compulsory Friday trip is the long one

Common questions

Can I pick up my bib on race morning?

No, not for any race, and there is no exception. The organiser states there is no race day packet pickup at Eakins Oval and no packet mailing. Marathon runners must collect on Friday or Saturday at the expo. Half marathon runners and anyone entered in a challenge must collect on Friday. This is the fact that decides how many nights you book.

Where exactly is the start line?

On the 2200 block of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, just east of Eakins Oval, near the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The marathon and the half marathon share it. The Rothman 8K starts separately at 25th Street and Kelly Drive, and the Kid's Run in front of the Art Museum on Kelly Drive.

What bag can I bring to the start?

A clear one, and nothing else. Backpacks, handbags and shoulder bags of any kind are prohibited for athletes and spectators alike, along with anything bulkier than 12 by 12 by 6 inches. Gear check on the south side of Eakins Oval also takes clear bags only, and your bag needs the event-issued tag torn from your bib.

What time do the security checkpoints open, and how early should I get there?

Checkpoints open at 05:00 for a 07:00 start. Everyone is screened by walk-through or hand-held magnetometer and every carried item may be searched. The organiser's own guidance is the one to take seriously: the start of the race will not be delayed due to lines at security checkpoints.

Where should I stay for the Philadelphia Marathon?

Logan Square if you can get it. It is the only area within a kilometre of both the start and the expo, which are 1.85km apart. Supply there is very thin, so Rittenhouse Square is the realistic fallback at 1.7km from the start with far deeper availability.

Is there an official hotel block?

Yes. Race-weekend reservations run through the official housing website, and it closes on 3 November 2026 at 5:00 pm EST. Rooms you are holding but no longer need should be released by 13 October 2026, after which hotels charge one night's room and tax for late cancellations and no-shows. Note the organiser's page gives weekdays for both dates that do not match the 2026 calendar, go by the dates.

Do hotels run shuttles to the start?

Some properties advertise race-weekend shuttles, but nothing official is published as a race service, and the start sits inside a secure zone that vehicles cannot enter. Treat any shuttle as a bonus rather than a plan, the guidance from the organiser is that Center City is compact and walkable, and on race morning walking is the only mode with no failure point.

Can I get to the start on SEPTA?

SEPTA runs two subway lines, Regional Rail and buses, and the organiser names routes 7, 32, 38, 43 and 48 as serving the Museum area. Fares are currently $2.90 on Bus and Metro and $5.00–$13.00 on Regional Rail. Detours for race weekend are published close to the date, so check SEPTA's alerts page in race week rather than when you book.

Where can I park?

Not near the start. The start and finish area is a secure zone across both Saturday and Sunday, and the City issues parking restrictions across the race footprint. The 2026 closure and parking release had not been published as of early August 2026 — the City's Office of Special Events issues it in the weeks before race weekend.

What are the road closures?

The 2026 list is not out yet. What is fixed is the shape: the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and Eakins Oval become a secure zone on both race days, with eight named entry checkpoints and no entry via Martin Luther King Drive. Expect closures along the Parkway, Kelly Drive and the course through Center City, University City and Manayunk.

Is the 2026 race sold out, and is there a waitlist?

The marathon and half marathon sold out on 24 July 2026, the earliest in the race's 33-year history, and that was after an extra 3,000 places were added. There is no public waitlist. The remaining routes in are official charity partners, and the 8K and Kid's Run were still open. Bib transfers between individuals are prohibited and buying one will not get you a result.

What is the time limit?

The finish stays open seven hours for the marathon, three and a half hours for the half and 80 minutes for the 8K, and all participants must maintain a 16 minute per mile pace. Seven hours is generous for a big-city marathon, and the pace requirement rather than the clock is what tends to catch people.
