Grandma's Marathon: you must take the provided bus, and only one pickup lets you park near the finish

A race that tells you where to sleep

Most organisers publish a transport page. Grandma’s publishes something closer to an accommodation map, and it is the most useful document of its kind we have found on any race website.

There are seven start-line pickup locations, and against each one the organiser states, in its own words, which accommodation area it suits:

That is the whole geography problem solved by the race itself. Whatever corner of the Twin Ports you end up in, there is a designated way to the start.

What the table does not tell you is which one to want, and there the organiser buries a decisive sentence.

Only one pickup lets you park near the finish

Of the seven, the DECC carries this note:

It can be one of the most congested loading sites, but it is the only site that allows you to park a vehicle within walking distance of the finish line.

That is the whole car decision in one line. Grandma’s is point-to-point — we measured Two Harbors to the Canal Park finish at 41.7 kilometres, and your car stays wherever you left it. Park at Proctor or UW Superior and you finish a marathon eleven or seven kilometres from your vehicle, dependent on a return shuttle to close the loop.

Park at the DECC, at $10 a day, and your car is 490 metres from the finish.

If you are driving to Grandma’s, that single fact should decide your pickup, and your accommodation should follow from it: Canal Park or downtown Duluth, which is exactly the area the DECC serves.

You cannot make your own way to the start

Like Loch Ness, this is not a recommendation. Every participant must use the provided transport, and the boarding windows are organised by corral:

Half past six is the last window across the whole event. There is no later bus, no independent route, and no arriving at Two Harbors under your own steam.

One further deadline catches people staying on the east side: London Road closes at 05:30, after which the Duluth East High School pickup can only be reached via Superior Street. If that is your corridor, your morning is governed by a closure half an hour before the first bus loads.

There is a train, and it comes with a warning

A genuinely charming option, and one almost no marathon offers: the North Shore Scenic Railroad runs a participant train to the start from the DECC, loading 05:00 to 05:45, with bathrooms on board and limited first-come seating.

It is marathon-only, not available for the Garry Bjorklund Half, and the organiser attaches an honest caveat:

the participant train … is expected to arrive at the Grandma’s Marathon start line no earlier than 7:10 a.m. … If you require or would enjoy more time at the start line prior to the race, please plan to take the provided bus transportation.

So the train is the better experience and the worse logistics: you board earlier, arrive later, and have less time at the start. For a first Grandma’s, take the bus. For a fifth, take the train.

Duluth has fewer beds than it needs

Checked on 4 August 2026, comparing race weekend with an ordinary weekend the following week:

Nineteen. About 40 per cent of ordinary supply, but the number that matters is the absolute one, because forty per cent of a small number is a very small number.

Median 1.66×. Note what the listings are: mostly whole houses and apartments with lake and lift-bridge views, at four-figure prices for three nights. That is what a small city looks like when a marathon arrives, the hotel stock goes first and what remains is short-let property priced for groups.

Which is why Superior, Wisconsin matters

The overflow answer here is unusually good, because it is not a compromise the organiser leaves you to work out.

Superior sits across the state line, 7.1 kilometres from the Canal Park finish, and it is a separate accommodation market that holds availability when Duluth has emptied. Crucially, the race services it properly: there is a dedicated pickup at UW Superior’s Wessman Arena, and the return shuttle names five Superior hotels it delivers to: Superior Inn, Best Western Bridgeview, Barker’s Island Inn, Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express.

That is a materially better overflow than most races offer. Compare Loch Ness, where the loch-side pickups exist but no return service does, stranding you at the finish. Grandma’s takes you out and brings you back, to a named hotel, for nothing.

The same applies to Proctor and to Two Harbors, each with its own pickup and named hotels, though Two Harbors carries its own caveat: those return buses depart on the hour, while every other route leaves when full. After a marathon, an hourly service is a long wait.

The weekend needs twice the beds the marathon does

One structural detail explains why 19 properties is worse than it sounds.

Grandma’s is not one race. The Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon runs the same morning, from a start closer to Duluth, and shares the same finish, the same pickup system and the same city. So the accommodation demand is not a marathon field. It is a marathon field plus a half marathon field plus both sets of families, landing on a small city on one Saturday in June.

That is the same arithmetic that makes Loch Ness the tightest market we have measured, and it produces the same result: the beds go far earlier than the entry does.

The practical booking sequence for a race like this inverts the usual order:

1. Book a refundable room first, as soon as you are seriously considering the race. In Duluth the room is the scarce thing; at most marathons the entry is.
2. Then enter. If the entry does not come off, cancel the room. You have lost nothing.
3. If Duluth has gone, take Superior immediately rather than waiting for a Duluth cancellation. The Superior pickup and named return hotels make it a supported option rather than a fallback, and it is a different market that empties later.
4. Only then think about which pickup you want, and if you are driving, that means the DECC, which means Canal Park or downtown, which is the part that goes first.

Steps 1 and 4 pull against each other, which is the honest tension of this race: the accommodation you want is decided by the car park you want, and both are scarce.

A June morning on Lake Superior

Worth a note for anyone picturing Minnesota in June as reliably warm.

The course runs the length of the Lake Superior shore on Scenic Highway 61, and Lake Superior is enormous, deep and cold well into summer. The lake moderates the shoreline temperature. It is part of why the race has a reputation as a fast, cool June marathon, but it also means the start at Two Harbors can be considerably cooler and mistier than a forecast for inland Minnesota suggests.

The accommodation consequence is small but real. You board a bus between 06:00 and 06:30, ride roughly 42 kilometres north, and then wait at an exposed lakeside start. Whatever you wear for that either goes back on the bus or gets discarded. Being able to pick up a throwaway layer in Duluth the day before, rather than in Superior or Two Harbors — is one more quiet argument for staying in the city.

What we cannot tell you yet

The 2027 start time is not published. Recent editions have gone at 7:45 a.m., and that figure is repeated widely, but it is not an organiser statement for 2027 and we have not carried it forward. The corral boarding windows above are the published values and are what actually governs your morning in any case, a start time you cannot reach is not useful.

The 2027 road-closure notice is also outstanding, beyond the London Road 05:30 closure the transport page states.

What is fixed: Saturday 19 June 2027, Two Harbors down Scenic Highway 61 to Canal Park, mandatory race transport with a 06:30 final boarding window, and a city with nineteen rooms left.
