Your bag is 670m further on, in Rosslyn
Wilson Boulevard and North Lynn Street
The Finish Festival and the UPS baggage trucks are in Rosslyn, past the memorial. Plan the extra walk before you plan the celebration.
Three places, not two
Most point-to-point races ask you to solve a start and a finish. The Marine Corps Marathon has a third fixed point, and it is the one that catches people.
We geocoded all of them:
| Leg | Distance |
|---|---|
| Runners Village (North Pentagon lot) → Marine Corps War Memorial | 2.53 km |
| Finish → Rosslyn baggage trucks and Finish Festival | 0.67 km |
You start at the Pentagon. You finish at the Iwo Jima memorial. And your bag — dropped at UPS trucks in Runners Village before the start — is waiting a further 670 metres away, in Rosslyn, at the corner of Wilson Boulevard and North Lynn Street, where the Finish Festival is held.
So the day ends with an extra walk that most people have not planned for, taken after 26.2 miles and a climb to the memorial, before you can get to dry clothes.
Set the zones against those points and the answer falls out:
| Zone | To the start | To the finish & bag |
|---|---|---|
| Rosslyn | 3.19 km | 0.67 km |
| Pentagon City | 1.02 km | 3.28 km |
| Crystal City | 1.62 km | 4.11 km |
| Washington DC (Mall side) | 3.46 km | 4.04 km |
Nothing walks to the start. Pentagon City comes closest at a kilometre, but a Pentagon City base leaves you three and a quarter kilometres from your bag at the end of the day, having already walked from the memorial to Rosslyn to get it.
Rosslyn is the answer, and the reasoning is the same principle this site applies everywhere: when you cannot remove a journey, put it at the end of the day rather than the beginning. Rosslyn Metro reaches the Pentagon start in two stops on a morning with no deadline other than a 07:20 gun; and when you finish, your bag, the festival and your room are all within about seven hundred metres.
Everyone is screened, at both ends
The organiser’s wording is short and worth reading twice:
All runners and spectators will be screened upon arrival to the start and finish areas on event morning.
Not just runners. Not just the start. This is a race organised by the US Marine Corps around the Pentagon, and the security posture reflects that.
It puts MCM in the same category as Philadelphia, where the perimeter rather than the distance is what governs the morning. The practical differences from a normal marathon:
- Arrive earlier than the gun time implies. A 07:20 start with screening in front of it is not a 07:00 arrival.
- Your supporters are screened too, so a family planning to see you off needs the same margin you do.
- Carry as little as possible. The clear bag issued at packet pickup is the only bag that goes on the truck anyway.
A Rosslyn base helps here as well, because the Metro delivers you into the start area rather than leaving you to find parking near the Pentagon on a morning when the roads around it are closing.
The pace rule is not a finish-line cut-off
Most races give you a time limit at the finish. MCM does something stricter, and the organiser states it in one line: the required pace is 14 minutes per mile, and you must make the gauntlets.
Gauntlets are marked points on the course that you have to reach by a given time. Miss one and your race ends there, mid-course, rather than at a finish line you were slowly approaching. The positions are on the official course map, and they are worth looking at before race day rather than discovering on it.
Fourteen minutes per mile is a little over six hours for the full distance, which is generous by most standards. The difference is where it bites: a slow first half cannot be recovered later, because the checkpoint arrives before the finish does.
Arlington is a small market hosting a very large race
MCM is the third-largest marathon in the United States. Arlington is not a large hotel city. That combination shows up clearly in the numbers.
Checked on 4 August 2026, twelve weeks out, comparing race weekend against an ordinary weekend the week before:
| Race weekend 23–26 Oct 2026 | Control 16–19 Oct 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Properties in Arlington | 93 | 150 |
Sixty-two per cent remaining. And on price, for the three properties we could match across both searches:
| Property | Race weekend | Control | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hilton Garden Inn Arlington/Courthouse | $1,810 | $521 | 3.47× |
| Sonesta Select Arlington Rosslyn | $1,159 | $450 | 2.58× |
| Clarion Collection Arlington Court Suites | $827 | $397 | 2.08× |
Median 2.58×, with one hotel at three and a half times its ordinary rate. Only three matched pairs were visible, so treat the precise figure with more caution than Chicago’s six-unit comparison, but the direction is unambiguous, and it is one of the sharper premiums we have recorded.
There is a straightforward reason to look across the river. Washington DC has far deeper supply than Arlington, and the Metro connects both ends of the race. The cost is that DC is the furthest option from both the start and the finish, and you cross the Potomac twice on a day when the bridges are part of the course.
No deferrals, no transfers
One policy line that changes how you should book:
There are no deferrals and no transfers of registration.
For a race that draws runners from across the country and beyond, that removes every option if something goes wrong. You cannot move your entry to next year, and you cannot pass it to someone else.
The entry risk is therefore unmanageable. The accommodation risk is not, and given a market at 62 per cent supply and 2.5× prices, a refundable rate is worth proportionally more here than at a race where rooms are cheap and plentiful.
The course crosses the river twice, which decides your supporters’ day
MCM is run in two jurisdictions, and understanding the shape of it is what lets anyone watching you plan a sane morning.
You start in Virginia, at the Pentagon. The course crosses the Potomac into Washington DC early, runs up through Georgetown, the organiser’s Water Point 2 sits at M and 33rd Streets — then along Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, out around West and East Potomac Park and Hains Point, back through the National Mall past the Smithsonian and the Department of Agriculture, and then crosses the river again on the 14th Street Bridge into Crystal City before climbing to the memorial in Arlington.
Two consequences follow.
For you: the two river crossings are the pinch points, and the 14th Street Bridge, where the organiser puts a self-serve cupless water station, arrives late, around the point where the race stops being enjoyable. It is long, exposed and quiet.
For anyone supporting you: the course passes through more genuinely interesting places than almost any marathon, but the crossings make it hard to see you twice. The workable pattern is the Mall in the middle of the race and then Rosslyn at the end, which is another argument for a Rosslyn base — supporters can walk from the Mall viewing to the finish festival without having to cross a closed bridge.
The one part of the course worth planning to be near, if you are not running, is Hains Point at mile 12. That is the wear blue Mile: Faces of the Fallen posters, each with a photograph and a name, and an American flag draped with a black ribbon held by a volunteer — often serving military or the families of the fallen. The organiser calls it the iconic on-course experience of the MCM, and runners consistently describe it as the reason they came back. It is also, for what it is worth to a first-timer, positioned at exactly the point in a marathon where a reason to keep going is most useful.
A note on why this page exists now
This guide was blocked for most of the project. Our own records had the Marine Corps Marathon failing the five-source standard because the organiser had not published participant logistics for the edition in question.
Re-checked twelve weeks before the 2026 race, that is no longer true. The organiser now publishes start times, the Runners Village location and its Metro access, the screening policy, the full baggage chain including the Rosslyn collection point, twelve water points and ten aid stations by position, the pace requirement, and the entry rules. It clears the bar comfortably.
The lesson is worth recording for the races still waiting: a blocked guide is usually blocked by the calendar rather than by the organiser, and the fix is to check again closer to the edition rather than to write around the gap.
What we cannot tell you yet
Arlington County had not published its 2026 road-closure and parking notice when we checked on 4 August 2026, so there are no street-level closure times on this page.
The gauntlet positions are on the official course map rather than stated as clock times in the participant text, so confirm yours against the map rather than assuming a uniform cut-off.
What is fixed: a 07:20 start at the Pentagon, screening for everyone at both ends, a finish 2.53 kilometres away at the memorial, a bag another 670 metres on in Rosslyn, fourteen minutes per mile enforced at checkpoints, and no way to defer or transfer if you cannot make it.
Verified race-morning logistics
| What | When |
|---|---|
| Corral closes · hard cutoff | Wheels 07:15, Duos 07:17, all runners 07:20 EDT |
| Bag drop closes | UPS trucks at Runners Village, North Pentagon lot, collected afterwards in Rosslyn |
| Road closures | Arlington County 2026 closure notice not yet published |
Runners must hold 14 minutes per mile and make the course gauntlets. There are no deferrals and no transfers of registration. All figures are the organiser's published 2026 values. Arlington County had not published its 2026 road-closure notice when we checked on 4 August 2026.

Where to stay: the three zones
Distances below are to Rosslyn, the finish, the baggage trucks and the Metro, the point you actually have to reach, which is not always the start line.
Our pick
Rosslyn
- To Rosslyn
- 0.67km to the finish and the baggage trucks
- To finish
- 0.67km
- Price
- $$$
The right answer. You cannot walk to this start from anywhere sensible, so optimise the end of the day and the bag instead.
What's available in RosslynWorks because
- The Finish Festival and your baggage are both here — you walk to your bag, then to your room
- Rosslyn Metro puts the Pentagon start two stops away on race morning
- The only zone that solves the finish, the baggage and the Metro at once
- Best positioned for getting into DC on the days either side
Costs you
- 3.19km from the start, so race morning is a Metro ride rather than a walk
- Arlington's supply is thin and Rosslyn is the part everyone wants — 93 properties across the whole county for race week
- The steepest premium we measured here
Pentagon City and Crystal City
- To Rosslyn
- 1.0–1.6km to the start
- To finish
- 3.3–4.1km
- Price
- $$
Better morning, materially worse afternoon. Reasonable if you are checking no bag and can walk straight back.
What's available in Crystal CityWorks because
- Closest to the Runners Village — Pentagon City is about a kilometre from the start
- Both served by the Metro stations the organiser names for start access
- Cheaper than Rosslyn, with more chain hotel stock
- Crystal City is on the course around mile 24, so supporters get a late viewing point
Costs you
- You finish 3.3km or more from your room, having already walked to Rosslyn for your bag
- That post-race journey is the longest of any option here, on the worst legs
- Less to do in the evening than Rosslyn or DC
Washington DC, Foggy Bottom and the Mall side
- To Rosslyn
- 3.5km to the start
- To finish
- 4.0km
- Price
- $$$
Choose it for the trip, not for the race. Workable with the Metro, but it is the option with the most moving parts.
What's available in Foggy BottomWorks because
- You are in Washington rather than in Arlington, which for most visitors is the point of the trip
- Far deeper hotel supply than Arlington across the river
- The course runs through Georgetown and the National Mall, so much of it is on your doorstep
Costs you
- Furthest from both ends of the race, and you cross the Potomac twice on the day
- Bridges and Mall roads close for the course, so the crossing is not straightforward
- You collect your bag in Rosslyn and then travel back into the city

Common questions
Where does the Marine Corps Marathon start and finish?
It starts on Route 110 beside the Runners Village in the North Pentagon parking lot, and finishes at the Marine Corps War Memorial, the Iwo Jima memorial, in Arlington. We measured the two at 2.53km apart. The Finish Festival and the baggage trucks are a further 670 metres on, in Rosslyn.
What time does it start?
Wheels at 07:15, Duos at 07:17 and all runners at 07:20 EDT. It is a single mass start for the main field, which is unusual for a race of this size. There are no staggered waves to wait through.
Is there a security check?
Yes, and it applies to everyone. The organiser states that all runners and spectators will be screened on arrival at both the start and finish areas on event morning. Build that into your timing rather than planning to arrive at the gun.
Where should I stay?
Rosslyn. We measured it at 670 metres from the finish and from the baggage trucks, and Rosslyn Metro reaches the Pentagon start in two stops. It is the only zone that solves the finish, the bag and the morning journey together, you cannot realistically walk to this start from anywhere.
How does baggage work?
You get a clear plastic bag and a sticker on the back of your bib at packet pickup. On race morning you drop the bag at the UPS trucks in Runners Village, organised by event and bib number. You collect it afterwards from UPS trucks in Rosslyn at the corner of Wilson Boulevard and North Lynn Street, so it crosses the race with you and ends up past the finish.
Is there a time limit?
The requirement is 14 minutes per mile, and it is enforced through gauntlets — marked points on the course you have to reach in time. That is different from a finish-line cut-off: you can be removed partway rather than at the end, so check the gauntlet positions on the official course map before race day.
How hard is it to find a room?
Harder than the race's reputation suggests. Checked on 4 August 2026, Arlington had 93 properties available for race weekend against 150 for an ordinary weekend the week before, 62 per cent remaining, and the three properties we could match across both searches were 2.1 to 3.5 times their normal rate. Arlington is a small market hosting the third-largest marathon in the country.
Can I transfer or defer my entry?
No. The organiser states plainly that there are no deferrals and no transfers of registration. Combined with a race most people travel to, that makes a refundable room the only part of the trip you can actually protect.
Is it a good first marathon?
The organiser calls it 'the best marathon for beginners', and the case is reasonable — no prize money, a single mass start, an enormous field and a flat-ish course. The logistics are the harder part: screening at both ends, a bag that finishes in a third location, and a pace requirement enforced at gauntlets rather than at the finish.
How we verified this
Every timing and closure on this page was checked against the organiser's own published sources on the dates below, by H. Ahmad. Research and data collection are AI-assisted; every logistical fact is verified by a human against the official source before publication. We don't take logistics from other guides — courses and cutoffs change between editions, and second-hand data goes stale silently.
